What is Endocrinology?
Endocrinology, a subspecialty of Internal Medicine, is the study of the hormone-secreting glands of the body including the thyroid, pancreas, parathyroid, pituitary, adrenals, ovaries, and testes. Diseases of the endocrine system can occur if hormone-secreting glands produce too much or too little of a hormone, or if the hormone itself does not function properly.
An endocrinologist typically sees patients for diagnosis and management of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemia, thyroid disorders, irregular menstrual cycles, hair loss, excessive hair growth, ovarian disease, osteoporosis, hypercalcemia, postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy, testosterone replacement, adrenal disease, or pituitary disorders.
